In addition to the things Mark is saying, one of the items in the vgift spec is to make sure that people can refuse to receive vgifts, (or limit getting them to only people in their circle, or block anonymous ones). I think that helps a little; anybody who thinks they're tacky and doesn't want them can block other people from giving vgifts to them.
