As far as I know, it's a totally new perspective! But it's definitely a
easier than trying to keep track of expiration dates, etc.
The expiring algorithm is the same as LJ's (or the same as LJ's was in '08 when we forked; don't know if they've made any changes since then): it goes by number of times the icon was used in your own journal, I think.
